Write the Vision: African Americans and Eye Diseases

♪ ♪ The diseases
that are most prevalent within the
African American population are diabetic retinopathy, which is a
complication of diabetes; cataract; and glaucoma. Unfortunately, for the
African American population, we may have heard of
some of these diseases, but we really don’t
know that they are… can affect us without
having signs or symptoms. So, many times African Americans
may be suffering from glaucoma, for an example, which is a
sight-threatening disease, and they may not
notice they have a disease until they have lost vision. And at that time, unfortunately,
that vision cannot be restored.
