NOW, BY HAVING A PHONE WITH A CAMERA, THAT DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT YOU ARE A CAMERA MAN. WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL GUEST THAT’S GONNA BE BREAKING DOWN THAT SUBJECT TODAY. AND DISCUSSING HOW YOU CAN MAKE THOSE SELFIES OF YOURS, A LOT BETTER. ♪MUSIC♪ WE’VE GOT SOME GREAT TALKS AT NERD NITE ORLANDO, AND NOW, WE’RE BRINGING THEM TO YOU.>>HEY GUYS! I AM HOLLY CARPENTER. I AM A FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER WITH ORLANDO WEEKLY AND ORLANDO SENTINEL, AND A COUPLE OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS. I WANT TO START OFF TODAY WITH A SMALL STORY. WHEN I FIRST GOT MY ORLANDO WEEKLY GIG THEY SENT ME TO A FASHION SHOW. AND WE GOT INTO THE FRONT OF THE LINE OF THE FASHION SHOW AND IT WAS ME AND A BUNCH OF OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS. SO WE CROWDED UP AT THE RUNWAY AND THEY SAID, “WHAT DO YOU GOT THERE?” I WAS LIKE, “OH, I GOT THIS CAMERA FOR MY BIRTHDAY” AND I WAS LIKE “I’M WORKING FOR ORLANDO WEEKLY. SO I’M GONNA TAKE SOME PICTURES OF THE EVENT.” AND THEY’RE LIKE, “ALRIGHT GREAT.” SO WHAT’S THE TYPE? WHAT’S YOUR ISO? WHAT’S YOUR APERTURE? WHAT’S YOUR SHUTTER SPEED? AND THEY JUST BOMBARDED ME WITH A BUNCH OF QUESTIONS. ALL OF THEM I JUST SORT OF WENT, UHHHHH. FASHION SHOW STARTS. MODELS COME DOWN AND THEY WALK AWAY. AND AT THE VERY END HE SAID, “CAN I SEE YOUR PHOTOS?” “YEAH, SURE.” I SHOW HIM THE BACK OF MY CAMERA AND HE GOES, “OH, HMM. GUESS EVERYONE’S A PHOTOGRAPHER.” AND AFTER I PICKED UP THE BROKEN PIECES OF MY EGO OFF THE FLOOR, I REALIZED HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING. EVERYBODY IS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND IT ALL STARTS WITH LIGHT. THE DEFINITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS BASICALLY TO DRAW WITH LIGHT. YOU BREAK OUT THE TWO PARTS OF THE WORD, “PHOTO” AND “GRAPHY” IT’S JUST “LIGHT” AND “DRAW”. AND THAT’S BASICALLY ALL WE’RE DOING, IS YOUR CAMERA IS TRYING TO RECOGNIZE LIGHT THAT IS COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD, TO PUT IT ON YOUR PHOTO. WHICH IS FUNNY BECAUSE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT YOUR EYE DOES. VERY BEGINNING OF OUR EYE EVOLUTION ENDED UP STARTING WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO KIND OF SEE LIGHT BUT NOT ACTUALLY KNOW WHERE IT’S COMING FROM. FROM THERE IT TURNED INTO A SORT OF CUP. YOUR EYE GOT BASICALLY ITS SOCKET, WHICH ALLOWED LIGHT TO COME THROUGH THIS PATHWAY. AND SO THE ONLY THING YOU COULD SEE IS EVERYTHING DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU. FROM THERE, IT TURNED INTO A PINHOLE. THAT PINHOLE ALLOWED FOR THE LIGHT TO DISPERSE, TO GIVE US THE 180 VIEWPOINT THAT WE HAVE TODAY. SO YOU’RE ABLE TO SEE A LITTLE BIT LEFT AND A LITTLE BIT RIGHT. FROM THERE, THEY COVERED UP THE HOLE AND YOUR EYE SOCKET ENDED UP FILLING WITH FLUID THAT ALLOWED YOU TO FOCUS ON THINGS. AFTER THAT, THEY GOT A LENS THAT ALLOWS YOU TO REALLY LIKE FIGURE OUT OKAY, THAT, THAT IS A PREDATOR. I NEED TO STAY AWAY AND BE ABLE TO DEFEND YOURSELF THROUGH EYESIGHT. FROM THERE WE GOT THE HUMAN EYE. AND THOUGH, WE DON’T HAVE EAGLE EYES, WE CAN’T NECESSARILY LIKE ZOOM IN ON SOMETHING AND THEN FOCUS ON IT. THEY’RE PRETTY AMAZING SPECIMENS. THE WAY THAT YOUR BRAIN TRANSLATES WHAT YOUR EYE IS SEEING IS ALL THROUGH A RECOGNITION OF LIGHT. AND SO IT’S ABLE TO SEE WHAT LIGHT IS HITTING AND THEN GO THROUGH THE LITTLE SORT OF, BASICALLY PINHOLE ONTO SOME RODS AND CONES THAT THEN TRANSLATE SIGNALS TO YOUR BRAIN ON WHAT IS BEING HIT WITH LIGHT, AND WHAT IS DARK. AND THAT’S HOW YOUR BRAIN IS ABLE TO SEE. FUNNY ENOUGH, YOUR CAMERA WORKS THE EXACT SAME WAY. IT’S BASICALLY A BLACK BOX WHERE LIGHT IS COMING THROUGH A PINHOLE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PROJECT AN IMAGE. IF WE WERE TO ACTUALLY BREAKDOWN OUR HUMAN EYE ONTO WHAT IT WOULD COST FROM A CAMERA’S PERSPECTIVE, IT WOULD BE WORTH OVER 35 MILLION DOLLARS. BECAUSE YOUR EYES ARE ABLE TO HAVE A 576 MEGAPIXEL RANGE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO GET THE AMOUNT OF DETAIL IT IS FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO SEE BASICALLY THE ENTIRE GRAND CANYON. YOU’RE ABLE TO SEE IN VERY LOW LIGHT AND FOR A 180 PERSPECTIVE. IF YOU WERE TO GET EQUIVALENT EQUIPMENTS FOR AN ACTUAL CAMERA TO GET ALL OF THAT DONE, IT WOULD GIVE YOU OVER 35 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF GEAR. SO IT’S A PRETTY AMAZING THING. THIS IS THE QUESTION I GET A LOT. WHY DOESN’T MY PHOTO LOOK LIKE WHAT I SEE? WHICH IS A LITTLE UNFAIR BECAUSE YOUR EYES HAVE HAD THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO EVOLVE TO BECOME THE AMAZING THINGS THAT THEY ARE. WHEREAS, YOUR CAMERA HAS HAD ABOUT 100 OR SO. IF YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT THE ONES ON YOUR PHONE, MAYBE ABOUT 10. SO, YOUR CAMERA’S TRYING. IT’S TRYING TO SEE WHAT YOU SEE THROUGH YOUR OWN AMAZING EYES AND CAPTURE THAT ONTO SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN KEEP. BUT THE TECHNOLOGY ISN’T QUITE THERE YET. SO EVEN THOUGH WE’RE ALL GOING OUT AND EXPECTING THAT THE SELFIE THAT WE TAKE INSIDE OF A DARK NIGHTCLUB IS GONNA TURN OUT TO LOOK AMAZING AND SOMETIMES IT LOOKS LIKE GRAINY AND AWFUL, AND TERRIBLE. IT’S NOT BECAUSE YOUR CAMERA’S WRONG OR YOU’RE TAKING IT NECESSARILY THE WRONG WAY. IT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT GIVING LIGHT OR YOUR EYES ENOUGH A CREDIT. YOUR CAMERA NEEDS A COUPLE OF THINGS IN ORDER TO GET YOUR PICTURE TO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE. FIRST I’LL START OUT WITH ISO. YOUR ISO IS TRYING TO GIVE YOU THE LIGHT SENSITIVITY OF THE FILM IN YOUR CAMERA. THE HIGHER YOUR ISO IS, THE GRAINIER YOUR PHOTO CAN BE, BUT THE LESS LIGHT THAT YOU WILL NEED IN ORDER TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. APERTURE IS THE NEXT THING. IF YOU WANT EVERYTHING TO BE IN FOCUS, YOU NEED A LOT MORE LIGHT. AND SO, AN F22 IN YOUR CAMERA TO HAVE EVERYTHING THAT’S IN FRONT AND YOUR BACKGROUND COMPLETELY IN FOCUS, IS GONNA NEED A HECK OF A LOT MORE LIGHT THAN YOU JUST WANTING THE LITTLE TINY FACE OF THE DINOSAUR IN FRONT. SHUTTER IS THE NEXT THING. IF YOU WANT IT TO BE STAND STILL AND SUPER QUICK, IT’S GONNA NEED A LOT OF LIGHT. THE SLOWER YOUR SHUTTER SPEED IS, THE MORE IT WILL STAY OPEN FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. THAT ALLOWS MORE LIGHT IN, BUT IT ALSO ALLOWS YOU TO SEE ALL OF THE MOVEMENT THAT IT CAN CREATE. ONE WONDERFUL THING IS, WE CAN CONTROL IT. WE CAN CONTROL THE COLOR OF IT. WE CAN CONTROL THE INSTENSITY. WE CAN CONTROL WHERE IT COMES FROM. WHETHER IT DEPENDS ON WHETHER YOU ARE FACING THE SUN, WHETHER YOU’RE UNDERNEATH A TREE. IF YOU’RE IN FRONT OF A COUPLE OF LIGHTS HERE, YOU HAVE THE POWER TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE COLOR AND INTENSITY AND WHERE IT’S COMING FROM TO GET THE PHOTO THAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR. SO YOUR EVERYDAY SELFIES, YOU’RE SITTING THERE IN A NIGHTCLUB GOING “MAN, THIS PICTURE IS TERRIBLE.” IT’S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU’RE MISSING LIGHT. THEY KEEP NIGHTCLUBS DARK FOR A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT REASONS. BUT WHILE YOU’RE IN THERE, TRY TO FIND THE LIGHT SOURCE THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO TAKE A BETTER PICTURE. WHETHER THAT BE THROUGH ONE OF THE LIGHTS ON THE CEILING OR ONE OF THEM ON THE BAR. IF YOU USE SOMEBODY ELSES PHONE. ANYTIME YOU ADD MORE LIGHT TO YOUR AREA, IT’S GOING TO CREATE A BETTER PICTURE. AND THE SAME COULD BE SAID FOR ANYWHERE. IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE, IF YOU’RE INDOORS. IF YOU’RE UNDERNEATH A TREE. ANY WAY THAT YOU CAN CONTROL THE LIGHT THAT IS IN YOUR PHOTO, IT WILL ALLOW YOU FOR A BETTER PICTURE IN THE END. SO, HE MAY HAVE BEEN A JERK BUT HE’S RIGHT. EVERYONE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER.>>MY QUESTION HAS TO DO KIND OF WITH LIKE THE OPPOSITE OF LIGHT, FOR LIKE NIGHT VISION. LIKE CAN YOU HAVE A CAMERA THAT WILL TAKE PICTURES IN THE NIGHT, LIKE A NIGHT CAMERA?>>THEY’RE WORKING ON IT. SONY HAS ACTUALLY JUST COME OUT WITH SOMETHING THAT HAS ALMOST A MILLION ISO. THE ISSUE IS, BASICALLY ONCE YOU GET TO A HIGHER ISO RANGE IT GETS REALLY, REALLY GRAINY AND MOST PEOPLE DON’T LIKE THE QUALITY OF THOSE PHOTOS. AND SO WE ARE TRYING TO ADAPT OUR TECHNOLOGY SO THAT WE HAVE SOMETHING THAT CAN CREATE BASICALLY DAY TIME AT NIGHT. A LOT OF CAMERA COMPANIES ARE STILL STRUGGLING WITH THE TECHNOLOGY TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A DECENT PHOTO.>>AND DO YOU THINK THE HUMAN EYE COULD EVER EVOLVE TO THAT DEGREE?>>I THINK IT ALWAYS IS.>>YEAH?>>I THINK THAT ANYTHING THAT WE, I THINK ANYTHING THAT OUR EYES ARE COMING UP AGAINST WILL TRY TO ADAPT TO WHAT OUR CURRENT STATUS IS BASICALLY. AND IF OUR TECHNOLOGY WASN’T QUITE AS QUICK AS OUR EYE’S EVOLUTIONS, IT WOULD BE–LIKE IF YOU WERE LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE SCREEN AND YOU KNOW HOW THEY HAVE SPECIAL GLASSES FOR YOU LOOKING AT A COMPUTER. IF YOU, IF WE WERE TO IGNORE THE FACT THAT OUR EYES DETERIORATE FROM LOOKING AT A COMPUTER SCREEN, I THINK OUR EYES WOULD ADAPT TO BEING ABLE TO LOOK AT A COMPUTER SCREEN FOR A LOT LONGER. BUT I THINK OUR TECHNOLOGY IS MOVING FASTER THAN THE EVOLUTION OF OUR EYES, SO WHEREAS OUR EYES ARE CONSTANTLY EVOLVING AND ADAPTING TO NEW SURROUNDINGS, THEY MAY NOT DO SOMETHING THAT OUR TECHNOLOGY IS ALREADY IN THE PROCESS OF FIXING.>>HI, HOLLY. MY QUESTION IS HOW LONG UNTIL THEY START PUTTING CAMERAS IN OUR EYEBALLS?>>I THINK YOU’RE MORE LIKELY TO GET GLASSES FIRST. I ACTUALLY JUST PREORDERED A PAIR OF VUE GLASSES OFF A KICKSTARTER THAT IS TRYING TO ADAPT SO THAT I CAN TAKE PICTURES JUST BY TAPPING THE SIDES. IT’S GETTING TO THE POINT WHERE THERE’S MORE SCRUTINY OVER GETTING LASIK EYE SURGERY RIGHT NOW, TO WANT TO DO SOMETHING AS TRIVIAL AS TAKING PICTURES WITH YOUR EYES. AND THEN OF COURSE, THE PROCESS OF HOW DO YOU CONTROL THAT. SO, DO YOU BLINK? DO YOU THINK ABOUT TAKING A PICTURE? THERE’S A LOT OF RESEARCH THAT WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO GO INTO THAT AND THEN IS IT ACTUALLY A PRACTICAL APPLICATION TO DO TO PUT, SURGICALLY IMPLANT A CAMERA INTO YOUR EYE.>>THANK YOU, HOLLY.
